October 5th, 2009

The point in this blog is to inform parents and guardians what is happening in their child's academic day. It is important to thoroughly read the blog and ask any questions. If you have any questions or comments about the blog feel free to leave a message here or email either Ms. Wallwork or Mrs. Swanson.

Social: Due to rocket launching this week, Tuesday, we will have our social unit test on Thursday, October 8th. Be sure to study from your study guide and to reread any chapters you may have found difficult. Reminder, if it rains on Tuesday we will have the social test that day and postpone the rocket launch until Thursday.

Science: Our BIG launch is on Tuesday, unless it rains, 9:00am at Whitney Fields. Be sure to send your child with a hat, gloves, and warm coat that day because we will be outside for about two hours. Everyone is welcome to attend the launch. Thursday will be a review day for the science test. The science unit test will be on Monday, October 12th. Permission slips went home in last weeks Thursday folder about the end of the quarter movie. They need to be signed and returned in order for your child to watch the movie.

Language Arts: Spelling this week is lesson 8, pronouns and words with more then one meaning. A reminder about nouns, adjectives, verbs, and other grammar rules would be a good thing to go over at home. The poetry unit is underway. A part of this unit includes making a display for each students' poems. We do this using any kind of scrapbook supplies we can come up with. I have a good start for the students but if you have stickers, card stock, , double sided tape, or any embellishments that you would like to donate, please send them with your son or daughter. Don't forget the unit will end with a wonderful coffee house for friends and relatives. Also, Mrs. Kolstad and I are in contact with a teacher from the Ukraine. We will be matching up your son or daughter with a pen pal in the near future.

Math:

Ms. Wallwork's class will identify US Customary units and convert to the metric system, draw and use ratio boxes, with a unit test on Thursday. Be sure to keep your vocabulary journals up to date.

Mrs. Swanson's class will learn about measures of a circle, naming the types of angles, multiplying and reducing fractions by dividing, and finally least common multiples and reciprocals. On Friday they will take another test to check on their progress.
